Lehigh Gorge is a state park, but it is threatened by the development that has destroyed the forests of the park since anthracite coal was discovered in 1791. When I came to Le High Valley, I visited one of the largest coal mines and museums in the state, the Pennsylvania State Museum. While I was working on my PhD thesis on the history of coal mining in Pennsylvania, I began work on a project for the Penn State University Museum of Natural History in Philadelphia.

Thomas Jefferson ended the grading of the South Lawn by erecting a hill on either side of the central lawn.
