A fire in Derry County damaged five homes early Monday and crews took more than six hours to extinguish a fire that burned along Pennsylvania Turnpike on Tuesday afternoon. The fire was reported at 9: 20 a.m. on WHTM and was being fought by eight fire companies, including Blairsville, after the fire caused serious damage to homes in and around D Kerry Borough, according to a news release.
The fire was reported on a road that crosses a ridge between the communities of Derry and Ligonier, according to the press release. The crew used SUVs and SUVs to reach the fire, which they extinguished sometime after 5 p.m., Kerry County Fire Chief John D. Dolan said. By Sunday afternoon, firefighters had brought a second blaze under control at another location on the same property, he said.
Chestnut Ridge Fire Service was initially dispatched and was supported by a number of other units, including firefighters from Derry, Ligonier and the Borough of Blairsville, as the fire spread to the forests bordering the turnstiles and Felgar Road.
